"Vera" is the story of Vera Martin, born in Zagreb in 1924 in a Jewish family. She was saved at 16 by a policeman who, in Italian occupied Dalmatia where she had fled the Nazis, refused to send her back to a sure death. He helped her cross over to Italy, where Vera has lived since. Only slowly, in the years after the war, did she realise that she was the only survivor of all her huge joint family - everyone else was dead. "Vera" is also the story of a birth. She owns two graceful, huge mares: Isabella and Anaxandra. For days before the foaling, Vera is anxious about Isabella’s pregnancy. There are tense days of waiting, then the pains of labour, and finally the miracle: a new life comes to the world. The interweaving of these two story lines – a story of death, a story of life – creates the structure of the film.
