The Jewish Film Festival Zagreb
In May, for the fifth year in a row, Zagreb will be hosting a film festival, unique in the world, dedicated to the Holocaust, the only one that promotes Jewish culture through its rich film program, screenings, musical events, meetings with world known film directors, producers and actors, thus educating through movies about the Holocaust, tolerance and mutual values being a foundation of happy coexistence in different national and religious surroundings. The film program, divided into two parts, consists of short, documentary and feature movies. The first part are the movies dealing with the Holocaust themes, mostly attuned to the theme the festival is dedicated to, and the second part are night screenings of contemporary Jewish film, mostly of Israeli production. So far, the festivals were dedicated to the most helpless victims of all wars, children victims.
The 2010 festival was dedicated to the Righteous among the Nations, the people who were saving threatened people’s lives thus risking their own and the lives of their kin, showing that there is no such evil that cannot be overcome by good. The Jewish film festival awarded the Righteous from Croatia and several royal families (Bulgaria, Morocco and Denmark) with the Certificates for courage and nobleness shown during that insane period of human history. The festival provides free screenings of the whole film program for its visitors and all the screenings are subtitled in English for the benefit of the foreign guests. The honorary president of the Jewish Film Festival is Mr Branko Lustig, the film producer awarded with two Oscars for the “Schindler’s List” and “Gladiator”.
The Jewish Film Festival Zagreb was for the first time organized in Croatia and South-eastern Europe in 2007. The first year it lasted for three days and in the following two years it was extended to five days. The public interest for the festival grows from year to year, so that the first year’s number of 2000 visitors grew to 7000 visitors and program participants in the fourth year, which is the rise of 350% in only four years, when shown as the percentage. The festival has the support of the Government of the Republic of Croatia, the Ministry of Science, Education and Sport of the Republic of Croatia, the City of Zagreb and other governmental and municipal institutions and economic agents.
5th Zagreb Jewish Film Festival
The fifth Jewish Film Festival will be held in the Europa cinema from May 22 to 28, 2011, in Zagreb. It will be organized with the theme “Women in the Holocaust” and will be dedicated to all women who were forced to cope with all terrors of the Second World War using their strength, courage, and confidence. On the screen in the Europa cinema in Zagreb, during seven days of the festival, we will show about forty movies. The selected film program mainly includes renown films awarded on other film festivals so that the Jewish Film festival can already be proud of respectable world known film makers who were guests in the previous years.
