From 1933 until 1941, within the Croatian National Theatre existed a theatre for children- the Children’s Realm. Everybody wanted to see two child stars. There was always a demand for an extra ticket and these stars were predicted a very bright future.
The stars were little girls Lea Deutsch and Daria Gasteiger, among whom developed a personal competition, but also a friendship. Their joint performance in Humperdinck’s operetta Hansel and Gretel was particularly successful.
With the arrival of Nazis, the Children’s Realm closed. The family Deutsch was converted from Jewish to Catholic religion, but even that didn’t help them. Lea, the Croatian Shirley Temple, died in horrible conditions of child transport to Auschwitz.
After the perennial research for the purposes of this film, Daria was found in Innsbruck, alive and willing to cooperate. She never again engaged herself in theatre or movies, albeit she remembers everything with nostalgia. Everything but… Lea Deutsch.
